Understand the rule
Wajib means obligatory and muttasil means connected. When a madd letter is followed by a hamzah within the same word, the madd letter must be lengthened four or five counts; the lengthening cannot be shortened. This is the strongest of the regularly met madd forms because both the madd letter and the hamzah are present and adjacent in one word. The learner should spot the madd letter first, then the hamzah after it.
When does it occur?
It occurs when a hamzah directly follows a madd letter within the same word.
Which letters are involved?
How is it pronounced?
Lengthen the madd letter four or five counts consistently, keeping a clear transition into the following hamzah.
Examples
The examples below are clearly labelled teaching examples and are not from the Quran. Use them to notice the rule, then confirm your recitation with a qualified teacher.
سَاءَلَ sāʾala (he asked) — Not from the Quran
Common Mistakes
- Shortening the madd to two counts as though it were natural Madd.
- Splitting the word in a way that turns the rule into the separated form.

Open lesson: Madd Jaiz MunfasilMadd Tabii
Madd Tabii is the natural two-count lengthening of Alif, Waw, or Ya when the matching vowel comes before it and no hamzah or sukoon creates another Madd category.
Open lesson: Madd TabiiMadd Badal
Madd Badal is the two-count lengthening that occurs when a hamzah precedes a madd letter in the same word, most often where an original second hamzah was replaced by the madd letter.

Obligatory and connected: one word, madd letter then hamzah, so the pull must be long.
Practice
Try to identify the trigger first, say the sound slowly, then listen and repeat. Short, accurate practice is more useful than rushing through many examples.
- What two conditions make a madd wajib muttasil?
- Why is this madd longer than Madd Badal even though both involve hamzah?

Important Note
Tajweed is best learned through both understanding and listening. Written explanations can help you understand the rules, but correct pronunciation, timing, and articulation are best learned by listening to a qualified reciter or teacher and practicing along with them.
For the best results, combine reading, listening, repetition, and guidance from a qualified Tajweed teacher.
