What is Madd Badal?

Badal means replacement. In this madd, a word originally carried two hamzahs, and the second hamzah was replaced by a madd letter. When the learner sees a hamzah followed by Alif, Waw, or Ya in one word, the madd letter is lengthened for two counts only, the same duration as natural Madd. The name reminds the learner that nothing stronger than a natural pull is required, because the hamzah that would have demanded more is no longer there.
