What is Heavy and Light Letters?

Tafkhīm is fullness or heaviness in the sound, while tarqīq is lightness. The seven permanently heavy letters are خ ص ض غ ط ق ظ (remembered as خُصَّ ضَغْطٍ قِظْ). Other letters, especially ر and ل in the name of Allah, can be heavy or light depending on their context. Listen and compare under qualified guidance rather than relying on English approximations.
