What is Raa Heavy and Light?

The Raa rule is one of the classic Tajweed topics that often appears in learner materials. It is not enough to say simply that Raa is heavy with fatha and light with kasra, because the rule is shaped by the Raa's own vowel state and by the letters around it. In the standard Hafs teaching of the common route, Raa with fatha or damma is heavy and Raa with kasra is light; an originally saakin Raa is judged from the preceding vowel, with detailed exceptions, and a Raa made temporarily saakin by stopping is judged from the preceding vowel or letter. These detailed cases should be learned from a qualified teacher rather than mixed with rules from another riwayah.
